Pada beberapa jenis serangga, misalnya laba-laba, terdapat hanya dua mata. Mata mereka ini agak lain dengan mata pada manusia dikarenakan kegunaannya. Mata pada serangga umumnya masih murni, tidak seperti mata pada manusia yang telah dapat digunakan untuk membaca.

Bentuk mata umumnya bulat seperti bola, akan tetapi hal ini tidak berarti bahwa mata selalu berbentuk bulat. Dapat saja terdapat mata yang berbentuk kotak, tidak berbentuk ataupun yang bentuknya tergantung tempat di mana ia berada. Contoh-contoh mata adalah: mata kaki, mata air, mata pencaharian, mata-mata, matahari dan matamu.
